Eglises villageoises

Over the centuries our village churches have been modified, reconstructed or embellished. These churches are well worth the detour for either the building itself or for the richness and quality of their decoration. They also witness “De l’aventure romane en Poitou” with their biblical scenes, interesting animals and plants either sculptured in stone or painted frescos. Some of the churches have old bronze bells which have since the 16th century summoned the villagers to mass, these bells keep watch over the roofs of the towns like a cockerel on guard.
Having admired the beautiful facades enter the interior and take time to discover the sacred art, colourful stained glass windows, crosses, altars and ornaments which many are works carried out by local artists.
Église romane Saint-Maurice du XII ème siècle
The church was constructed on the 12th century by the abbey Saint-Cyprien of Poitiers. On the outside the buttresses and columns of the churches are decorated with lions and griffins. The three arched entrance decorated with leaves, palms and animals invite you to enter the semi darkness and head for the clover leafed designed choir which is rare in this region. The quality of the roman nave is similar to the L’eglise Notre Dame la Grande’ of Poitiers. One must not miss, either, the stone markings on the southern exterior walls.
