Châteaux

Vieux château du XIII ème siècle

The remains of the medieval château of Gençay are classified as a historic monument. The château defended Poitou against ‘The lords of the Marche’ during Saint-Louis’ time. It is said that King Jean le Bon was imprisoned there by the Black Prince during the battle of Nouaillé-Maupertuis in 1356. The château is constructed in a triangular form which stood up well to the assaults of Du Guesclin during the two year siege against the English.

Gençay Castle can be found on the Route Historique des abbayes et monuments du Haut-Poitou: circuit Jean le Bon.

Le château de la Roche is surrounded by buildings that housed coaches, horses and crops. The best way to view the magnificent renaissance façade is to arrive by the tree lined ride which then takes on through the imposing iron gates. Once you have entered the hall you have access to the 18th century rooms, decorated by the Marquis de Créqui. One must not leave here without having visited the restored 19th century chapel with its stained glass window, first seen at the l’Exposition Universelle in 1880.
